Gelon, the son of Hieron II, was over fifty years old when he died in 216/5 B.C., shortly before the death of his father. At some point he had been made joint king with his father, but the exact date is not known.
The people of Syracuse dedicated this statue of king Gelon, son of king Hieron, to Zeus Hellanios.
