Greek Inscriptions: Sylloge Inscriptionum Graecarum

"Sylloge Inscriptionum Graecarum", edited by Wilhelm Dittenberger, is a collection of inscriptions from Greece and Asia Minor, ranging in date from the 6th century B.C. up until 565 A.D. The third edition (re-edited by F. Hiller von Gaertringen), published in three volumes between 1917 and 1920, contains a total of 1,268 Greek inscriptions, with comments in Latin. Over 500 of the inscriptions date from the period covered by this website, between the death of Alexander the Great and the battle of Actium, and they are an important source of information for the history of the period.

Many thousands of Greek inscriptions have survived, and the Sylloge makes access to them easier by selecting the most significant ones. It is a tribute to its success that, even though it was written almost one hundred years ago, and much work has been done on the inscriptions since then, it is still regularly used and quoted.

Links to translations of individual inscriptions are shown below. They are numbered approximately in chronological order; there is also a Concordance sorted by region and a list of Topics in Hellenistic inscriptions. Most of them have never been translated before; but the inscriptions flagged with * are available in translation elsewhere. The dates in brackets refer to years B.C. - where necessary, these dates have been adjusted to match the list of archons, but some of the dates (especially between 260 and 230 B.C.) remain uncertain, and they should be used with caution.
