In 180/79 B.C. Kallikrates went to Rome as the envoy of the Achaean League, and after that he was able to bring about the restoration of the Spartan exiles. This inscription, showing the gratitude of the former exiles, goes some way to counterbalance the very negative view of Kallikrates' actions expressed by the historian Polybios ( 24.10 ).

The Lakedaimonians who were forced into exile by the tyrants dedicated this statue of Kallikrates of Leontion, the son of Theoxenos, who brought them back to their homeland and reconciled them with the other citizens and restored them to the mutual friendship that originally existed.
