FROM THE MONTHLY ACCOUNTS OF A TEMPLE OF JUPITER CAPITOLINUS AT ARSINOE

Received likewise from the same as the price of iron removed . . . from the machine constructed to facilitate the erection of the divine colossal statue of our lord the Emperor Severus Antoninus, weighing 52 minas, at 5 drachmas the mina, altogether 260 drachmas. Total of the receipts 1605 drachmas. And there remained from the preceding month a balance of 24 drachmas. Total, including the balance, 1629 drachmas.

Souchus the twice great, for crowning all the medallions and statues and sacred images in the temple . . drachmas, for oil for lighting lamps in the shrine . . drachmas, charge for one donkey carrying trees and palm branches 4 drachmas. 18th, being a sacred day to celebrate the erection of the statue of our lord the Emperor Severus Antoninus, for crowning all the monuments in the temple as aforesaid 16 drachmas, for oil for lighting lamps in the shrine 4 drachmas. 20th, on the occasion of the visit of the most illustrious praefect Septimius Heraclitus, for crowning all the monuments in the temple as aforesaid 24 drachmas, for oil for lighting lamps in the shrine 6 drachmas, for pine cones and spices and other things 12 drachmas, charge for two donkeys carrying trees and palm branches 8 drachmas, for polishing all the statues in the temple with oil 20 drachmas, wage of a coppersmith for polishing the statues 4 drachmas, to porters who carried the image of the god in procession to meet the praefect 32 drachmas, for crowns for the said image 4 drachmas, to an orator who made a speech in the presence of the most illustrious praefect Septimius Heraclitus in acknowledgement of the Victory which he contributed to the possessions of the god and of other gifts 60 drachmas . . ., on the occasion of the visit of his excellency the procurator of the Imperial domains Aurelius Italicus, deputy chief priest, for crowning all the monuments in the temple . . drachmas, for oil for lighting lamps in the shrine . . drachmas. Disbursed also for [restoration?], a . . . having collapsed beside the temple of the god, wages of 3 masons demolishing and rebuilding, at 18 obols each, 7 drachmas 4 obols, likewise of 6 boys assisting the said masons, at 10 obols each, 8 drachmas 2 obols, wage of a brick-maker 2 drachmas, price of unbaked bricks including transport, in addition to those rescued from the demolition, 12 drachmas. 30th, salary of Nemesianus, temple watchman, for Phamenoth 28 drachmas, of Theoninus likewise 19 drachmas, of Xanthus, keeper of the archives, likewise 30 drachmas, of Boethus, secretary, likewise 40 drachmae, to the official in charge of the dispatch of the monthly accounts 12 drachmas. Total expenditure 732 drachmas 2 chalkoi. Left over for the succeeding month of Pharmouthi 896 drachmas 1 obol.
