CONTRACT FOR LABOUR IN AN OIL-PRESS

Phaophi 18. Agreement of Thenetkouis with Lucius. The third year of the Emperor Caesar Nerva Trajanus Augustus Germanicus, Phaophi 18, at Euhemeria in the division of Themistes in the Arsinoite nome. Thenetkouis daughter of Heron, olive-carrier, Persian, aged about 26 years, with a scar on the right shin, having with her as guardian her kinsman Leontas son of Hippalus, aged about 54 years, with a scar on the right side of the forehead, acknowledges to Lucius Bellenus Gemellus, discharged legionary, with a scar on the left wrist,that she has received from him directly by hand from his house 16 drachmas of silver as irrepudiable earnest-money. Thenetkouis is thereby bound to carry at the olive-press belonging to Lucius Bellenus Gemellus at Euhemeria from whatever day he orders her the olive crop included in the current third year, doing all that is required of a carrier until the completion of the entire oil-manufacture, and receiving from Lucius Bellenus her daily wage at the same rate as the similar carriers in the village; and Lucius shall deduct the 16 drachmas of silver by instalments from the wages to be paid. If Thenetkouis does not act in accordance with the conditions above written, she shall pay back to Lucius double the earnest-money, Lucius Bellenus having the right of execution upon the acknowledging party and upon all her property if by legal decision. {Subscribed}   I, Thenetkouis daughter of Heron, Persian, having with me as guardian my kinsman Leontas son of Hippalus, acknowledge that I have received from Lucius the 16 drachmas of silver forming the earnest-money, and I will carry at the olive-press from whatever day you order me, receiving from you, Lucius, my wages at the same rate as similar carriers, and I will do everything as stated above. I, Leontas, have written for Thenetkouis also, as she is illiterate.

{Docketed}   Registered in the 3rd year, Phaophi 18, by Heron, keeper of the record-office of Euhemeria. (Receipted) I, Lucius Bellenus Gemellus, have received through Epagathus the aforesaid 16 drachmas of silver and am satisfied. The 5th year of the Emperor Caesar Nerva Trajanus Augustus Germanicus, Tubi 12.
