SACRED CALENDAR AT HALASARNA IN KOS

For the temple of Apollo at Halasarna, see SEG_51.1050. This inscription lists sacrifices that that the priest there was required perform, over a period of about half a year (from early summer to early winter). The responsibilities of the priest clearly included many of the other local cults, as well as that of Apollo. The translation is adapted from G.Kokkorou-Alevras, in "The Hellenistic Polis of Kos", page 122.

The following instructions were inscribed by the elected men, Nikomachos son of Timainetos, Aristaichmos son of Aristarchidas, and Chairedamos son of Damophon, that is: which animals are to be sacrificed annually by the the priest of Apollo.

On the twelfth of the month Hyakinthios, a male sheep is to be offered to Hestia Phamia and to be carried over to the magistrates's office {timacheion}. It is not permitted that parts of the sacrificial victim should be distributed to women. Apollo shall receive a full-grown victim, and Hestia Timacheia shall receive a victim.
On the nineteenth of the month a full-grown male and a full-grown female victim shall be offered to Apollo; these are to be distributed to all the citizens. A male sheep shall be offered to the Dioskouroi, and a male sheep to Zeus Soter.
On the ninth of the month Karneios, a goat shall be offered to Aphrodite; in the middle of the month a victim shall be offered to Artemis Agrotera, and a full-grown goat to Hekate Stratia.
On the sixteenth of the same month a full-grown sheep shall be offerred Zeus Polieus on the acropolis, and a full-grown ewe to Athena Polias - alternately every other year to each of these gods; the meat of these sacrificial animals cannot be carried away.
On the twentieth of the month a victim shall be offered to Hekate Meliteine.
On the sixteenth of the month Theudaisios Apollo shall receive a full-grown male and a full-grown female victim; a victim shall be offered to Leto ; a full-grown female sheep shall be offered to [Artemis] Pythēis; . . . shall be offered to Zeus [Soter and] to Athena Soteira . . .
