LETTER OF ANTIGONOS, REWARDING MEN FROM BEROIA

Greek text:   Beroia_4
Provenance:   Beroia
Date:   223 B.C.

Although the name of the king is missing from this inscription, the discovery of another inscription ( SEG 60.586 ), which uses very similar wording, has confirmed that it should be attributed to Antigonos Doson. The date of the letter would then probably be August 223 B.C., when Antigonos was campaigning in the Peloponnese; and this interpretation of the date has been defended by M. Hatzopoulos in BE 2011, no. 399, p. 430 ( Persée ).

. . . and I have granted freedom from public liturgies to the officers who fought with me, when they have completed the campaign. I have written about these matters publicly to the Botteatai, and I decided to send also a separate message to you. Year 7, Gorpiaios 17.
