This is one of several decrees passed by the Samians to honour foreigners who had helped them when they were in exile from their island ( see for instance Syll_312 ). For the date of the decree, see P.Paschidis, "Between city and king", page 382 ( PDF ).

The translation is adapted from G.Herman, "The 'friends' of the early Hellenistic rulers", page 105 ( PDF ).

To Theotimides of Macedonia, the son of Theophilos.

It was resolved by the people, as proposed by Naniskos, son of Epigenes: since Theotimides of Macedonia, the son of Theophilos, while spending time with Antigonos, had made himself useful to the people during the exile;  and since he now continues to be useful with regard to those of the citizens who entreat him individually and with regard to the city collectively;   therefore it is resolved by the people to praise Theotimides 10 on account of the goodwill and zeal that he entertains towards the Samian people and to register him as proxenos and benefactor of the people; he shall be granted citizenship on an equal and similar basis, both for himself and for his descendants, and he shall be allotted to a tribe and a 'thousand' and a 'hundred' and a family, and he shall be enrolled in the same way as other Samians; he shall have the right of sailing into and out of the city inviolably 20 and without formality, both in war and in peacetime; and he shall have access to the council and the assembly immediately after religious and royal matters, if he needs anything; the generals and the prytaneis in office at the time shall have to deal with whatever Theotimides announces.  This resolution shall be engraved on a stone stele and set up in the sanctuary of Hera; the treasurer 30 shall provide for the expense.
