A THANK-OFFERING BY ATTALOS FOR HIS VICTORY OVER THE TOLISTOAGES

Greek text:   IvP_1.20
Date:   c. 238-227 B.C.
Format:   see key to translations

The battle by the river Kaikos, which is also mentioned in OGIS_276, was clearly the occasion when Attalos decisively defeated the Galatians - a victory that was 'the greatest of his achievements' ( Paus_1.8'1 ).   For an explanation of how this inscription relates to the other dedications made by Attalos in the temple of Athena at Pergamon, see B.S.Ridgway, "Hellenistic Sculpture", vol.1 pp. 284-287 ( Google Books ).

[King Attalos dedicated] this thank-offering to Athena, [after defeating] the Tolistoagian [Galatians] in battle by [the source] of [the river] Kaikos.
