THE RITUAL OF BRINGING IN SOKAR

This is one of several Egyptian religious texts which have been preserved in the Bremner-Rhind Papyrus, where it comes after the The Songs of Isis and Nephthys, with the Colophon inserted between them.

The translation is by R.O. Faulkner (JEA, 1937), who remarks that the text would have been recited during the festival of Sokar, which in Ptolemaic times took place on the 26th day of the month of Choiak. It is not clear why the goddess Hathor has such a prominent role in the text. There is another English translation by J.T. Dennis, with the title 'Hymn to Osiris-Sokar', which can found on the sacred texts website.

Recitation:
  O you who wore the White Crown even when coming forth from the womb!
  O eldest son of the First Primeval One!
  O possessor of many faces, manifold of forms!
  O pẖr of gold in the temples!
  O lord of time who grants years!
  O possessor of everlasting life!
  O lord of millions, rich in myriads!
  O you who shine when rising peacefully!
  O you who heal for yourself your (?) throat!
  O lord of fear, who makes men tremble greatly!
  O possessor of many faces, rich in uraei!
  O you who appear in the White Crown, lord of the wereret-crown!
  O august offspring of Ḥar-ḥekenu!
  O Soul of Rê in the Bark of Millions!
  O weary Leader, come to your shetayet-shrine!
  O lord of fear who came into being of himself,
  O weary of heart, come to your city!
  O you who rejoice, come to your city!
  O well-beloved of the gods and goddesses,
  O you whose waters are great, come to your temple!
  O you who dwell in the Netherworld, come to your offerings!
  O you who protect yourself, come to your temples!
  O you whose darkness is more enduring than the light of the sun!
  O august kiki-plant of the Great Temple!
  O august rope-maker of the Night-bark!
  O lord of the ḥenu-boat, youthful in the shetayet-shrine!
  O excellent power who are in the realm of the dead!
  O august controller of Upper and Lower Egypt!
  O hidden one whom the common folk do not know!
  O you who prevent the one in the Netherworld from seeing the sun!

  O you who are greatly majestic beside the naʿret-tree!
  O you who are in Thebes, who flourish for ever!
  O Amen-Rê, King of the Gods, who perpetuate your flesh in peaceful rising!
  O you who increase offerings and sacrifices in Rostau!
  O you who place the uraeus on the head of its lord!
  O you who establish the earth in its place!
  O you who open the mouths of the four great gods who are in the realm of the dead!
  O living soul of Osiris when he appears as the moon!
  O you whose body is hidden in the great shetayet-shrine in Heliopolis!
  O divine one who hides Osiris in the realm of the dead!
  O you whose soul rests in heaven, whose foe is fallen!

Isis the divine speaks to you with joyful (?) voice from the river which the pure abed-fish cleaves in front of the boat of Rê; the Lady of Horns is come into being with joy; the egg is come into being in the canal; the heads of the obstinate are cut off in her name of Lady of Aphroditopolis; the Lady of Horns is come in peace in her name of Hathor Lady of Sinai: the Lady of Thebes is come in peace in her name of Hathor Lady of Thebes; she is come in peace as? Tayt in her name of Lady of Hetepet: she is come in peace (?) to overthrow her foe in her name of Hathor Lady of the temple of Herakleopolis: 'Gold' is come in peace in her name of Hathor Lady of Memphis; . . . you are at peace in the presence of the Lord of All in the name of Hathor Lady of the Red Mountain; 'Gold' rises beside her father in her name of Bastet: who has gone in front of the houses (?) beside the Sanctuary of Upper Egypt in her name of Satis: who makes green the Two Lands and guides the gods in her name of Wadjet; Hathor has power over those who rebelled against her father in her name of Sakhmet ; Wadjet has power over good things (?) in her name of Lady of Momemphis: myrrh is on her tresses in her name of Neith.

  Hathor Lady of Thebes;
  Hathor Lady of Herakleopolis;
  Hathor Lady of Aphroditopolis;
  Hathor Lady of Sycamore-town;
  Hathor Lady of Roḥesa;
  Hathor Lady of the Red Mountain;
  Hathor Lady of Sinai;
  Hathor Lady of Memphis;
  Hathor Lady of Wawat;
  Hathor Lady of Momemphis;
  Hathor Lady of Imet;
  Hathor Mistress of Sixteen!

  O you Nine Companions, come with your hands bearing your father Osiris.
  The revered god comes - four times.
  Hail, Crowned One (?). Crowned One (?), Sovereign!
  Hail! How sweet is the smell which you love.
  Hail! May you live, may you live for ever.
  Hail! May you be joyous for ever.
  Hail! Obeisance to the Opener of Roads!
  Hail! May you be enduring in Upper Dedu.
  Hail, O god! Hear the jovous worship, hear the worship in the mouth of the god's region.
  Hail! He who came forth from his eyes is (?) the son of a prophet.
  Hail, you who are protected according to your word!
  Hail! Behold, Pharaoh does what you desire.
  Hail! Behold, Pharaoh does what you praise.
  Hail, O Seated One! Come, O O weary hearted one!
  Hail, O son of a prophet for whom the ritual is recited!
  Hail, you whose name endures in Upper Dedu!
  Hail, O sweet-savoured one in Upper Dedu!
  Hail! Come, you who crush the rebels.
  Hail! Come, O youthful adored one.
[20]   Hail! You who are feared by the obstinate!

As to any servant who shall serve his lord, there shall be no prophet of Bastet against him, but as for the obstinate one who hates the temple, death shall strike at his throat: the Lord of Upper Dedu has come and has smitten the obstinate.  Recite sixteen times and make music.
