FROM PETESOUCHUS TO MARRES

Greek text:   PTeb 56
Date: Late 2nd cent. B.C.

Petesouchus son of Marres, cultivator at Kerkesephis, to Manes son of Petosiris . . . his brother greeting. Know that our plain has been flooded and we have not so much as food for our cattle. Please therefore first of all to give thanks to the gods and secondly to save many lives by seeking out in the neighbourhood of your village five arourai of land for our maintenance, in order that we may thence obtain food for ourselves. If you do this, you will oblige me for all time. Goodbye.
