Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum: 39.1705

STATUE OF PTOLEMY XII AT TEBTUNIS

Greek text:   SEG_39.1705   ( CPI_2.283 )
Provenance:   Tebtunis
Date:   55 B.C.
Format:   see key to translations

This short but elegantly carved inscription was composed very soon after Ptolemy XII was re-installed as king of Egypt by the Romans in 55 B.C.; see Chris Bennett's summary of Ptolemy's reign ( note 19 ).   It is usually identified as part of the base of a particularly striking statue of a Ptolemaic king, which is now in the Graeco-Roman museum in Alexandria (inv. no. 22979).   The archaeological context of the discovery of the statue and the inscription is described by G. Cafici & G. Deotto, "Rediscovering Sculptures from Tebtynis at the Museo Egizio in Turin" ( JPG ).
