MANUMISSION OF HERMAIOS IN HYRCANIA

Greek text:   SEG_20.325
Date:   281-261 B.C.
Format:   see key to translations

This inscription, discovered in Gorgan (Hyrcania), shows that Greek forms of slavery and manumission were followed even in the far eastern provinces; see also THI_54 (manumission at Susa).   Adapted from the translation by Graham Shipley.

[A]   Euandros to Andragoras and Apollodotos, greetings. We have set free Hermaios on behalf of king Antiochos and queen Stratonike and their offspring, so that he may be sacred to Sarapis, and we have set up in the sanctuary a notice of his release and that of his family.   [..]th day of Gorpiaios. Farewell.
