DELOS HONOURS AUTOKLES OF CHALKIS

Greek text:   IG_11.4.680 ,   IG_11.4.681 ,   IG_11.4.682
Date:   239-229 B.C.
Format:   see key to translations

These decrees granted honours to a father (A) and to his son (B, C). Part of another decree has survived ( IG_11.4.679 ), in which Delos granted proxeny to the father - similar to B. Yet another inscription ( IG_11.4.1194 ) records that Autokles set up a statue of his father, Autokles son of Ainesidemos, in a stoa near the temple of Apollo on Delos.

Inscription A mentions the Macedonian king, Demetrios II; during his reign, there is evidence of increased Macedonian interest in the island of Delos ( see inscription 91 ). An inscription from Oropos ( EpOropou_57 - Greek text ) shows that Autokles son of Ainesidemos had connections with other Greek states.

For the relationship with king Demetrios, see P.Paschidis, ,"Between City and King", pp.304-6 & 442-3 ( PDF ).   The translation of B and C is adapted from C.Constantakopoulou, "Aegean Interactions: Delos and Its Networks in the Third Century", pp.123-4 ( Google Books ).

[A]   It was decided by the council and the people, as proposed by Synonymos son of Theaios. Because Autokles son of Ainesidemos from Chalkis, who is a friend of king Demetrios, and also proxenos and benefactor of the sanctuary and of the Delians, has shown great zeal and care on all occasions, both in speaking and in acting, for the interests of the sanctuary and the Delians; and he has provided services [both] to the city as a whole and individually for [those things] that any of the citizens may have requested from him. Therefore it is decided by the council and the [people to crown him] with a laurel crown [in the sanctuary; and the sacred] herald [shall announce] in the [theatre, when the choruses] of the boys [are competing], . . .

[B]   Gods.   It was decided by the council and the people, as proposed by Praximenes son of Kallidikos. Because Autokles continues to be a good man with regard to the sanctuary and the people of Delos, and has provided services both to the city as a whole and individually to those of the citizens who appealed to him for those things that anyone may have requested from him. Therefore it is decided by the council and the people that Autokles son of Autokles, from Chalkis, shall be proxenos and benefactor of the sanctuary and of the Delians, both himself and his descendants; and they shall have the right to own land and buildings on Delos, and access to the council and the the people first after sacred matters; and they shall have everything else that is given to the other proxenoi and benefactors of the sanctuary and of the Delians. The council shall inscribe this decree in the council house, and the hieropoioi shall inscribe it in the sanctuary.   Parmenion son of Polyboulos put it to the vote.

[C]   It was decided by the council and the people, as proposed by Telemnestos son of Aristeides. Because Autokles son of Autokles from Chalkis, who is a proxenos and benefactor of the sanctuary and of the Delians, has shown great zeal on all occasions for the interests of the sanctuary and the people; and he has provided services both to the city as a whole and individually for [those things] that any of the citizens may have requested from him. Therefore it is decided by the council and the people to crown him with a laurel crown; and the sacred herald shall announce in the theatre, during the festival of the Apollonia when the choruses of the boys are competing, that that the people of Delos crowns Autokles son of Autokles, from Chalkis, with a laurel crown because of his virtue and piety towards the sanctuary and his goodwill towards the people of Delos; and this decree shall be inscribed on the stele, where his proxeny decree is written.   Isodikos son of Kalliphanes put it to the vote.
