OGIS: 746

CONSECRATION OF XANTHOS BY ANTIOCHOS III

Greek text:   TAM_2.266
Date:   197 B.C
Format:   see key to translations

In this unusual inscription, Antiochos was probably attempting to justify his conquest of Xanthos, along with the rest of Lycia, by honouring the local gods - see, for instance, C.P.Jones, "Kinship Diplomacy in the Ancient World", page 69 ( Google Books ).

Antiochos the great king consecrated this city to Leto and Apollo and Artemis, on account of the kinship that connects him to them.
